Artists work in many different ways, and may take many steps to reach their finished piece. From sketches and photos, to composition and color studies, to the final piece of art, this show examines how an illustration is created. Explore how artists document their process as they depict flora and fauna found at the Museum.
From amateur artists to working professionals in the arts and sciences, members of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators (GNSI) share a love of nature and depicting its many intricacies. Founded at the Smithsonian Institution, the GNSI is a nonprofit organization of artists employed or genuinely interested in the field of natural science illustration. GNSI-Carolinas helps promote public awareness and understanding of scientific illustration by producing several group exhibitions each year.
