View familiar objects at the atomic scale! To explore the atomic scale, scientists use very large and powerful microscopes that can capture pictures of atoms. Like looking through a telescope to see the stars, these electron microscopes make it possible to see how atoms arrange themselves to form a material.
The images in this exhibit were made at the Analytical Instrumentation Facility (AIF) at North Carolina State University, which is supported by the State of North Carolina and the National Science Foundation. Above, an image of silicon nitride at the atomic scale.
