  • Teddy Bear Hospital

    Join us on Saturday, November 17, 2018, from 2-5pm, as the Museum of Life and Science hosts the Duke Children’s Teddy Bear Hospital sponsored by Duke Department of Pediatrics. This event is open to the public, and kids are encouraged to bring their favorite stuffed animal friends to explore activities designed to highlight the body, physical fitness, and healthy habits.

    The program will include special appearances by Durham Bulls mascot, Wool E. Bull, from 2-3pm, and players from the Duke Women’s Lacrosse and Tennis teams. Kids will have the chance to interact with and have their stuffed animal examined by Duke pediatric doctors across several disciplines and check out a Duke Life Flight ambulance! Prizes will be raffled off every 30 minutes.

    Duke Children’s will provide a small number of teddy bears for kids who do not have one, but since supplies are very limited, guests are encouraged to bring their own. Both the Elements Museum Store and Gizmo Garage have a wide array of fun stuffed animals available for purchase at the Museum. This event is included in the price of admission.

Join us for a full day of Pokémon hunting, where you can travel the trails, hatch an egg, visit our 22 Pokéstops, and show off your skills at our three gyms! We'll be setting lures all day to attract wild Pokémon all over our 84-acre park.

    We'll have charging stations and special Pokémon-themed programming throughout the day. Bring your friends, and have a full day of Pokéfun!

    All Aboard the Santa Train!

    The Museum of Life and Science is pleased to host the 41st Annual Santa Train, the Museum's largest annual fundraising event and holiday tradition for the whole family.

    Thousands of twinkling lights will shine throughout the Museum campus, guiding the way to all the fun! Check out the "ice" skating rink for skate-in-your-socks excitement. Sip complimentary hot chocolate, have your face painted, and explore our crafts and activities tent where you can make and take special treats and learn about the science of Santa. Then hop on board the train for a moonlit ride to the North Pole, where Santa and his elves will greet all of our guests. On your way out, be sure to visit our pop-up Museum gift shop to take home something special!

    Your ticket purchase does so much more than help you make memories with your family. Proceeds from this event support the Museum's mission to create a place of lifelong learning, where people from young child to senior citizen embrace science as a way of knowing about themselves, their community, and their world.

    Activities

    Climb aboard the Ellerbe Creek Railway for a journey to the North Pole. Enjoy a ride through thousands of twinkling lights as you make your way to meet Santa and his elves. Back at the station explore festive activities including:

    • Face painting by Paint Savvy
    • Holiday crafts
    • "Science of Santa" activities including hands-on snow polymer, simple circuits, and more
    • Holiday music and light displays
    • "Skate in your socks" synthetic ice rink

    On saturday, November 17th, environmentalist Alison Singer and biologist Jacob Becker will be with us to talk about their research on pollution and facilitate some hands on activities for the day.

    All Aboard the Santa Train!

    We're excited to offer another year of sensory friendly Santa Train rides for guests with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other similar needs.

    Our sensory friendly train rides will include no yelling in the tunnel and no whistle sound during the train’s ride. Some sounds and lights will be lowered. Additional staff and volunteers from the UNC TEACCH Autism Program will be on-hand to assist guests. Cool down kits, noise-cancelling headphones, and social narratives will be available upon request. Train rides after 6pm will return to full light and sound. If you are unable to ride at these dates and times, cool down kits, activity systems, noise-cancelling headphones, and social narratives will be available for all Santa Trains.

    Please reserve these train times for the ASD community.

    Your ticket purchase does so much more than help you make memories with your family. Proceeds from this event support the Museum's mission to create a place of lifelong learning, where people from young child to senior citizen embrace science as a way of knowing about themselves, their community, and their world.

    Activities

    Climb aboard the Ellerbe Creek Railway for a journey to the North Pole. Enjoy a ride through thousands of twinkling lights as you make your way to meet Santa and his elves. Back at the station explore festive activities including:

    • Face painting by Paint Savvy
    • Holiday crafts
    • "Science of Santa" activities including hands-on snow polymer, simple circuits, and more
    • Holiday music and light displays
    • "Skate in your socks" synthetic ice rink
    • Complimentary hot chocolate
    • Pop-up Museum gift shop
    • Sprout Cafe will be open for light snacks and coffee

    Tickets must be purchased in advance and will not be available at the Admission Desk or event check-in location.

    All ticket changes will result in a $10.00 processing fee per transaction and the difference in ticket price, if any.

    $10.00 of each $15.00 ticket, $15.00 of each $20.00 ticket, and $17.00 of each $22.00 ticket is tax-deductible.

Microcontrollers 101 is an introductory session, so no coding experience is required. We’ll work together to use Makey Makeys and LilyPad Arduinos to build our own circuits and experiment with different programing languages like Scratch and Arduino Programming Language. Create a twinkling constellation and learn how to code basic video games!
