  • Take a Child Outside Week

    Sep 30th, 2018
    All-day Event
    Free With Admission

Take a Child Outside Week gives adults and children a great way to get outside and explore! The Museum of Life and Science is celebrating with a week of events to encourage your whole family to experiment in the great outdoors. When was the last time you took a nature walk? Or planted something in your garden? Have you ever built a boat or a fort from natural materials?

Take a Child Outside week is sometimes abbreviated as T.A.C.O.—and we love nature and tacos! In celebration, our Sprout Café will feature tacos as this week’s blue plate special.

    Activities Include:

    Forest Forts
    Sept 25 – Sept 30 | All-day event | Hideaway Woods
Let your inner-builder run wild in the woods. Use foraged materials to make a den, a nest, or a tiny cabin. What will you create together?

    Boat Building
    Sept 25 | 9:30-11:30am and 12:30-2:30pm | Hideaway Woods
Join us in the Hideaway Woods stream for some building and floating. Use natural materials to construct a water-ready craft. A Museum Educator will be on-hand to help boat builders and sailors.

Meet a Keeper – Black Bears
    Sept 25 – Sept 28 | 2pm | Explore the Wild
Hike out to the wetlands for an outdoor Meet the Keeper program! Spend time with our expert Keepers daily at 2pm in Explore the Wild. You can learn all about our black bears: their habits and habitat. Our Keepers will also share information about where to find wild bears in NC and what to do should you encounter one.

    Meet a Keeper – Lemurs
    Sept 29 – Sept 30 | 2pm | Explore the Wild
Spend time with our expert Keepers daily at 2pm in Explore the Wild. Have you ever wanted to know why Lemurs have thumbs? Do they swing from trees with their tails? Maybe you’d like to know where they come from – and why does the Museum take care of lemurs, anyway?! Our amazing Keepers can tell you all about this (and more!) when you take a trip to the lemur house in Explore the Wild.

    Find Ranger Greg
    Sept 25 – Sept30 | All-day
Ranger Greg is our resident naturalist, and author of the amazing natureblog.org site. He’s got a wealth of information about flora and fauna native to our area. While he ranges (get it?) around the campus, he loves to talk about the natural world, and how we interact with it, as well as how it interacts with us. As you’re walking, see if you spot a tall, thin man with a seriously cool beard wearing our uniform – you’ve probably found Ranger Greg! Take a minute, ask him your questions about the wildlife and plants around you. You just might come away with a new understanding about the world you live in.
