  • Editing Our Evolution: Rewriting the Human Genome

    Feb 23rd, 2018
    6:00pm - 8:00pm
    Free, but pre-registration is requested.

Join us in a forum-style event based around human genome editing. Funded by a grant through the National Science Foundation’s Building with Biology Project, the panel will include local scientists, researchers, students and experts in the field who will add their expertise, voices, and perspectives.

As gene editing techniques become more refined, the possibility of editing the human genome is moving from science fiction to reality. What should we do with this power? Many in the scientific community are calling for strict regulations on the use of this technology, while others are excited about the possibilities.

Ask questions and participate in conversations around ideas like:

    • Should we create babies who will never know disease?
    • Should we stick to smaller changes, like lowering the rates of breast cancer by eliminating mutations?
    • Should we call for society to ban human gene editing?
    • Who should decide?
    • How can we maximize benefits from these scientific advances while minimizing the harm that might come from them?

We hope to give our community a place to discuss in-depth issues, cutting-edge technology, scientific discoveries and how we interact with the changes around us. This forum is better suited for people 16 and over.

    Light refreshments will be provided.

  • Scientist Saturday in The Lab

    Feb 24th, 2018
    10:30am - 4:30pm
Free With Admission | In The Lab

Join scientists from Duke as we explore how Earth’s atmosphere affects the ocean and its creatures! Do experiments, ask questions, and explore practical earth sciences with:

    • Rebecca Lauzon – A Coastal Geomorphologist (that means she studies the evolution of coastal landscapes)
    • Colleen Bove – A Coral Ecologist (she studies ocean acidification and the warming effects on coral reefs)
    • Kim Drouin – A Physical Oceanographer (she studies the circulation of the South Atlantic Ocean.)

    About Ocean Acidification

The world’s oceans play a vital role in keeping the Earth's carbon cycle in balance. As people add more greenhouse gases to the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels, the oceans respond by absorbing more CO2. When CO2 is absorbed by seawater, chemical reactions occur that reduce the pH of seawater, causing the water to become more acidic. These chemical reactions are called “ocean acidification.” Over the last few decades, the amount of CO2 dissolved in the ocean has increased all over the world, and so has ocean acidity. Increasing acidity is a problem because it reduces the availability of chemicals needed to make calcium carbonate, which corals, shellfish, some types of plankton, and other creatures rely on to produce their hard skeletons and shells.
