    Explore how objects float or sink. Use your best engineering skills to tackle the problem of buoyancy.

    Feb 6–Feb 11 — Surface Tension
    Break into this week’s lab that is all about surface tension! Discover how some animals can walk across water, and test to see if you can help water defy gravity.

    Feb 13–Feb 18 — Glowing Oceans
    Dive into a week of ocean experiments in The Lab! Play and learn with the glowing creatures of the deep sea.

    Feb 20–Feb 25 — Ocean Acidification — Scientist Saturday
    Join us as we explore how Earth’s atmosphere affects the ocean and its creatures.

    • On Saturday we will have scientists from Duke join us to facilitate and talk to guests about their research in Oceanography.

    Bring a friend, grab a beer, and start making stuff at the Museum of Life and Science’s tinkering happy hour at Beer Study! Whether you’re an amateur engineer or a master maker, we’ll have tools and technology for you to tinker with, from circuit building to fiber arts. 

    There is a $10 suggested donation at the door to cover materials and supplies (no pre-registration required).

    Adult Workshops is a curated series of workshops for adults, for which the Museum of Life and Science pairs up with our favorite Triangle-area experts. Dive in deep and explore the science behind some of your favorite things, and come away with tips from the pros for ways to build your skill on your own. Enroll in individual workshops or sign up for the full series. **Participants must be 21+.

    In our first series, explore what goes into brewing beer and making bread, with the help of brewers from Raleigh Brewing and bakers from Ninth Street Bakery. Details:

    The living thing that is responsible for both beer and bread, and is often under-appreciated--yeast!     Although we don’t always notice it, water has a major impact on the earth around us. Join us to learn about how water erosion shapes the world and use NC State’s Sand Box AR to virtually create your own waterways.

    November 20-26 - Salty Science
    Where does salt come from? Learn all about this amazing crystal by peering through microscopes and creating a painting to take home!

    November 27 - December 3 - Cranberry Chemistry
    Investigate the properties of this tart Thanksgiving treat by revealing secret messages and peering through microscopes!

    December 4-10 - Holiday Lights
    The holidays are here and that means lights! Create your own circuit of holiday lights and explore the combinations of ornaments you can make.

    December 11-17 - Cookie Chemistry
    Discover the science behind baking as we mix things up in the Lab! Let’s figure out how cakes and cookies can be so fluffy by brewing up a bubbling batch of chemical concoctions.

    Holiday Tinkering
    Play and tinker in The Lab, holiday style! See they many ways you can create your own ornaments.

    Snow Science
    Let’s explore what makes snowflakes so unique! How do ice crystals compare to the crystals of other minerals? Get an up-close look at different crystals using our microscopes, then learn the chemistry behind real and fake snow!

    Warm in Winter
    How do you keep warm in the winter? What about different animals? In this lab, we'll use a calorimeter and a cold environment to investigate the ways that we stay nice and toasty. Build an experimental coat out of different fabrics, then look at real animal coats under the microscope!

    Arctic Architecture
    We will be building in the Lab today! Rise to the challenge and build igloos and gingerbread houses that will stand up to our tests.

    Thermal Reactions–Explore the Science of Thermodynamics!

    * All participating children must be accompanied by an adult. We kindly request that one adult accompany every two children if the participants are under the age of 12.

    Tinkerers of all ages and abilities will love these hands-on workshops! Once a month join our team of expert educators as you explore the latest technologies such as 3D printing pens and wearable electronics, while developing skills that create real-world connections to science, technology, and engineering.

    Get ready to see thermodynamics in action as we use infrared cameras to observe our temperature-changing reactions. Experience liquid nitrogen demonstrations as we cool things down to less than −320 F° and feel the heat as we test thermal conductors and insulators. Use liquid crystal sheets to create - and take home! - your own color changing device to investigate temperature wherever you are!
