When can I register for homeschool classes?
Typically, registration opens in April for the Fall semester and in October for the Winter and Spring. Registration closes the weekend before classes begin. Make sure you are notified by signing up at our listserv.

Is there a cancellation policy?
You may cancel your reservation for a full refund up to 48 hours before the event day. After this time, we are unable to process any refunds. You may cancel your reservation by calling the  Museum at (919) 220-5429 ext. 313, Monday thru Friday between 8:00am and 4:30pm.

What should we wear?
Since the Museum provides indoor and outdoor exploration options, we recommend dressing for both indoor and outdoor exploration. Closed-toe shoes are always our recommended choice (especially as you head outside).

How do I purchase train tickets?
Train tickets are purchased at check-in, based on availability. The cost of a train ticket is $3.50 per member and $5 for the general public. There are no refunds for missed or unused train tickets.

When can we arrive?
Check-in for members begins at 9:00 am. Check-in for general public begins at 10:00.

Where do I park?
We've almost doubled our parking with a new three-story parking structure in the South lot! This is in addition to the current spaces in our North and South parking lots. Our Parking Deck is open (weather permitting) from 8am–6pm every day we're open.

There are multiple racks that accommodate up to 15 bicycles located on the front entry plaza.

Two electric car chargers are located in the main lot.

How much time does it take to see everything?
It's easy to spend the whole day with us and explore every indoor/outdoor experience! Our outdoor experiences may take more time, especially factoring in the time to get to different parts of our campus. We generally recommend about an hour per outdoor exhibit and a half-hour for each indoor exhibit.

What are the most popular exhibits?
Every exhibit is worth visiting - but we do have a few favorites by our visiting school groups!

Catch the Wind is the perfect place to get outdoors and get an interactive look at how wind affects our environment. Whether you're sailing a boat, experimenting with mist, or exploring how to make the most efficient flying seed, there's a part of this exhibit for you!

Launch Lab is another favorite for upper ages. Located on the first floor of the Museum, this space features wind tubes for testing flying objects, and a mechanical paper airplane launcher to help your students perfect the best airplane design.

Finally, don't miss out on Magic Wings Butterfly House! Walk into a 3-story tall glass conservatory featuring over one hundred tropical plants and hundreds of exotic butterflies. Time your visit just right and you can experience one of our daily butterfly releases of newly hatched butterflies into the conservatory. See our full daily program schedule here.

Where do we eat lunch?
Coolers and picnics are only allowed at the Picnic Dome, conveniently located across the street from the main Museum building.

We offer an onsite full-service cafe and a coffee bar. Beverage vending machines (cash-only) are also located throughout campus. See Museum map for cafe and vending locations.

We understand that visitors may need a beverage or snack in order to fully enjoy a day at the Museum, so we allow the following outside food or beverages beyond entry into the Museum:

  • Spill-proof and re-usable sippy cups, travel mugs, and water bottles.
  • Light snacks for children in single-serving, re-sealable containers (for example, small bags of grapes, baby carrots, or goldfish crackers).

We ask that these are served on benches or other seating adjacent to exhibits. Cafe tables are for Sprout Cafe customers only.

For the safety of our animals, disposable straws are prohibited on campus – including juice boxes.

Is there a gift shop?
Yes! You can visit our school group store, Gizmo Garage, located next to Soundspace just beyond the main lobby. Prices in Gizmo Garage range from $0.50 to $15.00, including tax, to make shopping fast and easy for kids. Storage of your group's purchases is available upon request. Save some time for a quick trip to Gizmo Garage, our kid’s souvenir store. Prices include the tax, and with all items under $15, it’s simple for even the youngest student to choose a special item to remember their trip.

Are Museum programs aligned with my students' essential standards?
Yes, they are. Just look for the pencil icon to see the NC Essential Standard Strands that align with each program. You can read about our essential standards alignment by clicking this link.

Do homeschoolers get the school group rate on other days?
Homeschoolers qualify for the school group admission rate any day of the year, but they must make a reservation 2 weeks in advance and come with a group of 10 or more people. A state-issued homeschool ID may be required at check in.

What do I do if I need someone else to pick up my child from class?
Authorized pickups are entered through your UltraCamp account and can be adjusted up to the week proceeding class. After that time, authorized pick ups can be entered manually into our class rosters. On the first day of class, please be sure to check your child’s roster for the names of individuals authorized for pick up and add anyone else. You can also speak with or contact staff with changes during the week.

Members receive UNLIMITED admission all year long!
