A special message to our visitors on the autism spectrum and their families
We honor Autism Awareness Month
In the past, the month of April looked very different at the Museum. We held a day of celebration around autism and neurodiversity that attracted hundreds of visitors, offered month-long information about autism in our exhibit spaces, and we created unique programs just for families with loved ones on the spectrum. Our partners at UNC TEACCH worked collaboratively with our staff and other community organizations on these beloved programs and events.
This April, we’re heartbroken that we’re still unable to offer any in-person special events and programs. We must continue to uphold state and local mandates to reduce the spread of COVID-19, limiting our attendance numbers and our ability to host large groups of people.
But we are hopeful. And we are still here for you.
- We still offer the same autism support resources you’ve come to expect during a regular visit: skilled staff support, Cool down kits, noise-canceling headphones, hands-on science exhibits designed for sensory-seekers, and spaces that are comfortable for those who need limited sensory input.
- We are working with parents and caregivers to learn more about resources and experiences that we can provide in the future when we can gather together again without mandates.
- All of our birthday party experiences include sensory-friendly activities and resources. Please visit Museum Birthday Parties for more information.
- If visiting isn’t an option, we continue to offer engaging online experiences like Lab@Home.
- Finally, if you’d like to join our mailing list to get updates about upcoming sensory-friendly programs and events, fill in the form below
We remain committed to supporting our visitors on the autism spectrum as we look forward to the eventual return of an atmosphere resembling our previous years together.
