Investigate the science behind your favorite fermentables! From beer to bread, kombucha to coffee, celebrate the microbes that bring flavor and funk to your favorite foods with our experts. Our curated AfterHours accessory kits will provide you with the eats, drinks and activities for an educational at-home experience. Then, log on to learn about the history and culture of the fermentation process and what makes it unique to tasty items we consume today.

Rob Dunn, Reynolds professor in Applied Ecology at NC State and author of six books, including his newest: Delicious: The Evolution of Flavor and How it Made us Human, will take us on a trip back in time to the beginnings of fermentation and share his findings on how taste has shaped human evolution.Your ticket to event includes a 30% off coupon so you can be one of the first to pick up his book when it is released on March 23rd!

Did you know the Roman’s brought fish sauce as far north as Hadrian’s wall? Michelle Jewell, M.S., Chief Science Communicator at NC State Department of Applied Ecology will discuss the importance of community around fermented products and how they spread throughout the world over time.

Let’s talk beer! Sip some of our areas best brew while the experts at Bond Brothers Beer Company team up with advanced cicerone, Andy Morrison from Precision Fermentation, to discuss how the fermentation process changes when brewing different beers. He’ll also give you a look into the The BrewMonitor® System and its end to end fermentation monitoring and analysis.

Join Kyle Ramage, United States Barista Champion (2017) World Barista Championship Finalist (2016 and 2017) and 1/2 of the mind behind Black and White Coffee Roasters, while he talks about the representation of fermentation in the coffee roasting process and what makes their sourcing method unique.

What’s a fermentation event without Kombucha? Grant Ruhlman from Durham’s very-own small batch, consciously crafted Homebucha, swings by to answer your questions and walk us through the process of making this healthy and delicious fermented tea!

To top it off, all money raised from this event will benefit conservation and education initiatives that help inspire lifelong learning at the Museum.

How it works:
1. Purchase a ticket to our online event + optional AfterHours Accessory Kit through our Ticketleap website.

Pre-purchased AfterHours Accessory Kits are available for pre-purchase until Monday, March 8th to be picked up from Sam’s Bottle Shop in Durham, NC beginning March 15th from 11 am – 6 pm.

2. Log onto our webinar on Friday, March 19th at 7:00 PM using the link in your ticket confirmation email.

3. Have fun!

FAQ:

Q: I don’t live in the area; can you ship an AfterHours Accessory Kit to me?
A: No, the Museum does not currently have the ability to ship beer, wine or spirits.

Q: Do I need to purchase an AfterHours Accessory Kit to attend this event?
A: No! There will be plenty of awesome content to satisfy your craving for fermentation knowledge even if you don’t purchase a kit.

Q: How do I pick up my kit?
A: Beginning Monday, March 15th, you may pick up your kit by visiting Sam’s Bottle Shop (1112 NC-54, Durham, NC 27707) from 11 am – 6 pm by bringing your ticket confirmation to the check-out counter. Please be prepared to show your ID for age verification.

Kits must be pre-purchased by Monday, March 8th and are available for pickup on or after Monday, March 15th. No kits will be available for sale on-site.

Q: If it’s on zoom, can you see me?
A: No, this is a webinar. You’ll be able to see & hear the presenters, but they won’t be able to see you. You’ll have option to submit questions at any time through our Q&A feature. So, feel free to rock your jammies and slippers!
