Museum of Life and Science

In this workshop, we will follow our pieces from raw material to finished, glazed ceramic.

Facilitator Julia Gartrell introduces North Carolina clay: What it is, where to find it, and how to refine it. Then we will begin hand-building with locally harvested clay and decorating with slips made from native material. We’ll learn about the science and history of firing and glazing, then glaze and finish our own work.

Julia Gartrell holds an MFA in sculpture from RISD and has exhibited and taught nationally and internationally. She was born and raised right here in Durham.

Finished pieces available for pickup after Julia completes the final firing.
