Adult Workshops: Clay Pots
In this two-part workshop, we will follow our pieces from raw material to finished, glazed ceramic.
Session 1 — Saturday, May 2, 2 – 4 pm
Session 2 — Saturday, May 16, 2 – 4 pm
In the first session, facilitator Julia Gartrell introduces North Carolina clay: What it is, where to find it, and how to refine it. Then we will begin hand-building with locally harvested clay and decorating with slips made from native material.
Between sessions, Julia will bisque fire the pieces. When we return on May 16, we’ll learn about the science and history and science of firing and glazing before glazing and finishing our own work.
Julia Gartrell holds an MFA in sculpture from RISD and has exhibited and taught nationally and internationally. She was born and raised right here in Durham.
Finished pieces available for pickup after Julia completes the final firing.
