Eco Printing

March 21

2 – 4 pm

Museum Member $35, General Public $40

In this 2 hour class from Bailey Wall of DyeAnthos Botanical Fiber Arts, students will get to eco print a beautiful cotton bandana with a bright color background.

Eco-printing (a form of natural dyeing) is the art of getting an exact print from nature to fix onto natural fibers like cotton or silk. Using a steam/heat method along with a tight resist and just the natural chemicals in the plants (leaves, flowers, etc), it is possible to get permanent prints from nature to stay on the fabric.

Students will get to learn how to make their own cotton bandana with a vibrant color background and will learn information on the eco-print art form in general. We will be using a mix of different deciduous and evergreen leaves and barks as well as flowers, stems, seeds, etc to get a vibrant mix of shapes and colors.

All of the plant materials used will yield an interesting array of color and texture. All of the cotton used in this class has been pre-mordanted by the instructor and will keep its print permanently.
