Join the Museum in celebrating Latine and Hispanic Heritage Month with workshops throughout the month! At our kick-off event on the September 14 Durham Community Day, meet our visiting partners and learn about the month’s activities! All workshops are included with admission.

Conozca a la arqueóloga y epigrafista, la Dra. Gabrielle Vail, y aprenda todo sobre la astronomía y el cálculo del tiempo maya. Encuentre su “zodiaco maya” y cree un medallón con su cumpleaños en glifos mayas.
Meet archaeologist and epigrapher, Dr. Gabrielle Vail, and learn all about Maya astronomy and time-keeping. Find your “Maya zodiac” and create a medallion with your birthday in Maya glyphs!

Kick off Latine and Hispanic Heritage Month with a traditional Mexican papercraft and learn about NASA satellite imaging.
Sept. 24 – 27: Midiendo el tiempo/Keeping Time
El pueblo maya creó el calendario más preciso del mundo hace miles de años. Descubra las matemáticas y la astronomía detrás del cálculo del tiempo y haga su propio calendario maya.
The Maya people created the most accurate calendar in the world thousands of years ago. Discover the math and astronomy behind keeping time and make your own Maya calendar.
Oct. 1 – 4: Óxido o nada/Rust or Bust
Investigue la reacción química detrás de las líneas de Nazca, enormes formas talladas en el desierto peruano hace miles de años, y cree su propia obra maestra de óxido de hierro.
Investigate the chemical reaction behind the Nazca lines: enormous shapes cut into the Peruvian desert thousands of years ago, and create your own iron oxide masterpiece.
Oct. 8 – 11: Memoria tejida/Woven Memory
Teja un mensaje en código binario, tal como los técnicos de memoria de cuerda del pueblo navajo tejieron circuitos para la computadora de guía del Apolo (Apollo Guidance Computer) que llevó a los humanos a la Luna.
Weave a message in binary code like the Navajo core rope memory technicians wove circuits for the Apollo Guidance Computer that took humans to the Moon.

Drop in for play-based STEM activities designed for little learners and their caregivers. Throughout Latine and Hispanic Heritage Month, we’ll be incorporating Spanish “palabras de la semana” into our activities. It’s the perfect way to learn and play together!
