The Train
All aboard the Ellerbe Creek Railway for an old-time train ride through the Museum grounds! Take a 10-minute ride through the Museum park on our beloved scale replica C.P. Huntington locomotive. As you make two laps around the track, keep an eye out for creative art installations that encourage you to notice your surroundings in a new and whimsical way.
With our wheelchair accessible ramp and railcar, everyone can enjoy the ride.
Locomotive made possible by a generous donation from the Teer family.

Durham railway history
Explore a piece of local railway history! Our caboose was donated to the Museum by the Durham and Southern Railway and the Seaboard Air Line Railroad in 1965. It originally ran on the Seaboard line as SAL 5306, before it was rebranded as D&S X-86 as a memorial. Though it never ran on the D&S rails, it has hosted many adventures for the children of Durham and beyond.
