You and your attorney may choose both a type and a purpose for your bequest gift to the Museum of Life and Science. We will be happy to work with you and your attorney to craft more specific language to accomplish any additional goals.

Unrestricted bequests

Percentage
I hereby give, devise, and bequeath ____ percent (___%) of my total estate, determined as of the date of my death, to the Museum of Life and Science, a nonprofit organization located at 433 W. Murray Avenue, Durham, NC, 27704, Federal Tax ID #56-0938434, for the Museum’s general use and purpose.

Residual
I hereby give, devise, and bequeath to the Museum of Life and Science, a nonprofit organization located at 433 W. Murray Avenue, Durham, NC, 27704, Federal Tax ID #56-0938434, ALL OR A PERCENTAGE of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate to be used for the Museum of Life and Science’s general use and purpose.

Contingent
If (primary beneficiary) does not survive me, then I hereby give, devise, and bequeath to the Museum of Life and Science, a nonprofit organization located at 433 W. Murray Avenue, Durham, NC, 27704, Federal Tax ID #56-0938434, DESCRIPTION OF PROPERTY to be used for the Museum of Life and Science’s general use and purpose.”

Restricted bequests

If you would like to designate your bequest for a specific purpose (e.g., scholarships, animal care, campus upkeep), please let us know. We will be happy to work with you and your attorney to help you identify ways to meet your charitable objectives. We will also work with you and your attorney to craft language to accomplish your goals.

If you are making a restricted bequest, we recommend that your attorney include the following provision to give the Museum of Life and Science flexibility should it no longer be possible for our us to use your gift as you originally intended:

“If, in the judgment of the Board of Directors of the Museum of Life and Science, it shall become impossible for the Museum to use this bequest to accomplish the specific purposes of this bequest, the Museum of Life and Science may use the income and principal of this gift for such purpose or purposes as the Board determines is most closely related to the restricted purpose of my bequest.”

Bequests purposes

Language such as below may be added to any of the bequest types above.

“….to be used for the Museum of Life and Science’s general use and purpose.”

“…to be used by the Museum of Life and Science, with preference given to scholarships and educational programs.”

“…to be used by the Museum of Life and Science, with preference given to animal care.”
