Since 2014 the museum has exhibited the 20 winning photos of this worldwide photomicroscopy competition. The exhibit showcases how scientific research and creative imagery combine to make stunning photos and videos. This year’s first-place winner is Jason Kirk, who produced a striking image of a southern live oak leaf’s trichomes, stomata, and vessels (three structures essential to plant life). The photo is composed of over 200 individual images. 

The Nikon Small World Competition began in 1975 as a means to recognize and applaud the efforts of those involved with photography through the light microscope. Since then, Small World has become a leading showcase for photomicrographers from the widest array of scientific disciplines.

The Museum will also feature the winners of Nikon Small World in Motion, the video microscopy competition that started in 2011. The videos feature both videomicrography “movies” and digital time-lapse microphotography.

The photo exhibit will be in Terrace Gallery on the second floor near Investigate Health! exhibit. The show will run through May 22, 2022.
