2024 Pupdate #4
June 18, 2024
This pup check is likely the last “easy” one with the pups in the den. As the pups age the den is a place for only some of the day — and some of the night. Furthermore, this is a good pup-age to focus on training new people on handling pups.
The Team is given specific instructions for all pup checks:
- Long sleeves, long pants, and gloves are required
- Bring an extra set of clothes to change into after — you will end up being pooped on and covered in poison ivy (the wolves walk through and even play with poison ivy without any of the impact that us humans have when we come in contact with it)
- Be serious — handling the most endangered wolf on the planet is no laughing matter (although I find it kind of funny watching the team not smiling or giggling)
- Be prepared for me to step in quickly, either verbally or physically, to give guidance on the handling process
Weighing, deworming, and quick check were on the list. From start to finish we try to take less than 15 minutes. Move efficiently and keep everyone safe and secure. This tends to be our plan with all our Red Wolf work.
Finally, gone are the days when everyone would squeeze into my office to see what was happening on the den camera. The pups are out and about. COME BY TO SEE THEM!!
